Part of the fascination of the Twilight series of books and movies is getting an insight into how a vampire family (or coven) lives. Although the story is essentially about a love between a human and a vampire, the vampire characters come to dominate the latter parts of the narrative. We learn about the secret society, the Volturi, that governs how vampires should live but most importantly we learn about the Cullen family. The Cullen family is actually a coven headed by Carlisle Cullen and his wife Esme.

The children of the family, including Edward, are not actually their biological children as vampires can't have children. They are in fact humans that have been turned into vampires by Carlisle. In this context they are his children and he takes on the responsibility of educating them about how to live as a vampire. A vampire parent you could say.

Carlisle has been on the earth for quite a long time – over 400 years in fact. As a human, he haled from a fairly middle class family in England. His father was a clergyman and held a quite important role in the community. Consequently the Cullen's had a crest that has passed down through the ages with Carlisle. The crest features heavily on much of the jewelry that many of the Cullen family members wear at times. This includes Esme's bracelet, Rosalie's necklace , Alice's choker and various rings that are worn by Carlisle himself and even Bella Swan in some parts.
